Abuse is occurring when there is an ongoing pattern of undermining, mind games, verbal put downs, criticisms, intimidation, isolation, angry outbursts, sexual domination, the silent treatment, harassment, character attacks, manipulation, control tactics, possessiveness, jealousy, belittling or physical violence of any kind.
The impact of abuse can include: loss of self-esteem, depression, anxiety, panic attacks feelings of worthlessness, self blame, confusion, shame, guilt, anger and/or suicidal thoughts. Trauma can also be suffered when the safety of our self or someone else is threatened. The shock and terror of that situation creates a sensory overload. Later unconscious memories can be triggered and recalled in the form of nightmares, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, memories, images, sounds or body sensations.
The information contained in good books on these subjects is invaluable.
